Corona City Council elects new mayor, vice mayor

The Corona City Council elected Vice Mayor Karen Spiegel to be the new mayor and Councilman Eugene Montanez to be vice mayor on Wednesday, Dec. 6.

Spiegel became mayor after serving as vice mayor for a year in accordance with a city ordinance. The council has had a policy since at least the 1990s that the top vote-getters from an election cycle become the mayor and vice mayor.

The five council members voted unanimously and then Spiegel and Montanez were sworn in at a special meeting before the regular council meeting at City Hall. They will serve in the posts for a year.

The way mayors and vice mayors are elected in Corona is expected to be brought up for discussion by the council in mid-2018, the year the city begins having district-based council elections, said outgoing Mayor Dick Haley.
